PAP Genetics
This is the genotype distribution of the Red Mountain Genetics herd including several hundred pap tests since 1994 including seven generations. It demonstrates the reason why we have had limited results in solving the brisket problem. There are many heterozygous animals (i.e. one normal allele and one brisket allele) with PAPs in the high 30's and low 40's. As a consequence animals we have recommended for high altitude may in fact be carrying a brisket allele. The interesting aspect of this is that there are animals with PAPs up to 40 that may be suitable for the highest elevations.
It also demonstrates that treating this as a "trait like other traits" such as yearling weight will not be productive.
